China is moving humanoid robots out of laboratories and toward larger-scale production.

Chinese industry officials say the country is expected to produce more than 100,000 humanoid robots in 2026, as domestic robotics firms push toward wider commercial deployment.

That does not mean China has suddenly built a science-fiction robot army. Many humanoids still struggle with basic real-world tasks, and serious questions remain about how much genuine commercial demand exists. Recent demonstrations have shown impressive speed alongside plenty of awkward crashes and unfinished capabilities.

But the direction is unmistakable:

China is trying to industrialize robotics at scale.

Meanwhile, America is increasingly fighting over the physical infrastructure required to remain dominant in AI.

Data centers are facing resistance over electricity prices, water consumption, noise, land use, and massive power demands. A recent Annenberg survey found 61% of Americans oppose a new data center in their own area, including majorities or near-majorities across partisan groups.

And governments are responding.

• Pennsylvania has imposed new environmental, transparency, and local-approval requirements while removing data centers from a fast-track permitting process.

• New York has enacted a one-year statewide moratorium on large data centers.

• Texas has paused some approvals for projects seeking grid connections while officials review the impact on the power system.

• In Maryland, Montgomery County approved an 18-month moratorium on new large-scale data-center permits while officials develop new regulations.

Some of those concerns are legitimate. Nobody should expect families to quietly absorb higher electric bills so a trillion-dollar technology company can get subsidized power. Developers should pay for the infrastructure they require, protect water supplies and deal honestly with communities.

But America cannot confuse responsible development with paralysis.

Artificial intelligence requires enormous computing capacity. Advanced robotics depends on AI infrastructure, semiconductors, manufacturing capacity and reliable energy. Countries that dominate those systems will gain major economic and national-security advantages.

China is treating robotics as an industrial race.

In parts of America, the infrastructure needed to compete is increasingly getting bogged down in permitting fights, grid constraints, and local opposition.

The conservative answer shouldn’t be blank checks for Big Tech. It should be to build more energy, streamline permitting, make developers pay their own way, protect homeowners, and then build the infrastructure America needs to win.

Nuclear. Natural gas. Grid expansion. Domestic semiconductor production. Robotics. Data centers.

All of it.

Because while Americans argue over whether the next data center should exist, Beijing is betting that the next generation of machines should be made in China.

The United States spent decades learning what happens when it outsources manufacturing.

We shouldn’t spend the next decade learning the same lesson about AI and robotics.

President Trump’s Thursday night address on election security came with something rare in American politics: a real-time paper trail. “Tonight, I am announcing the immediate declassification and release of critical intelligence, revealing shocking vulnerabilities in our election infrastructure,” he told viewers from the East Room. “You can see these documents for yourself at whitehouse dot gov… Go check it out.”

Within hours, four sets of declassified documents — 56 files in all — were live at whitehouse.gov/election-integrity. Riptide did exactly what the president invited the country to do.

The core of the president’s case holds up against the source material.

China’s Documented Hostility Toward His Re-Election

The most quoted line of the night was also the most precisely sourced. The president told viewers: “CIA reporting explicitly stated, and I quote: ‘In mid-2018, The Chinese Communist Party’s policy was to leverage all domestic and foreign elements that were opposed to the U.S. president in an effort to reduce the U.S. president’s votes and make him resign or prevent his re-election.’”

That’s not a paraphrase or a talking point — it’s an accurate quotation of a declassified intelligence document, read into the record.

The president also told viewers that “the Chinese government sought to identify U.S. journalists who had reported negatively on the U.S. President and pay them large sums of money to write more negative articles about him, as many as they could.” The same CIA note supports this: it describes China seeking “to identify U.S. journalists who had reported negatively on the U.S. President and pay them to write more negative articles about him.”

A Voter-Data Exposure Larger Than Almost Anyone Realized [200M+ RECORDS]

“The People’s Republic of China carried out what is believed to be the largest compromise of election data in history, resulting in Chinese acquisition of two hundred and twenty million U.S. voter files,” the president said. “That information includes names, addresses, phone numbers, political party preferences, and other sensitive data that would be needed to register to vote.”

The China voter-data document set backs up the scale, if not always the precise figure. It includes a catalog of personally identifiable information — including specifically labeled voter registration files — that ran into the hundreds of millions of records, with individual named state voter databases in the millions of records apiece, containing full names, addresses, birth dates, phone numbers, and party affiliation. An 18-state memo further documents that Chinese analysts had obtained and were working with voter registration data spanning states from Florida to Maryland to New York, explicitly for the purpose of profiling the American electorate — echoing the president’s warning that the data was sufficient “to register to vote and engage in other nefarious activities.” Whatever the precise chain of custody on any single data set, the documents make one thing clear: a foreign government had extensive, granular access to information on American voters that most Americans would assume was never leaving the country.

The Infrastructure Warnings Were Real — and Blunt

“For years Americans were blatantly lied to about the security of our election infrastructure, including electronic voting machines and ballot counting systems,” the president said, citing an assessment that reads: “We judge that the United States’ adversaries, including at a minimum Russia, China, Iran, North Korea, as well as non-state groups, have the capability to compromise U.S. election infrastructure.”

Skeptics of that framing should sit with the actual declassified language rather than the summary. The quote is accurate, word for word, from a national intelligence assessment released in the document set. A CISA election report — the government’s own cybersecurity agency — separately documents that in multiple penetration tests, its assessors “gained full network control within hours or days” of state and local election networks, calling many of those systems “soft targets incapable of stopping even moderately skilled adversaries.” That is the government’s own security agency, in its own words, confirming the vulnerability the president described is not rhetorical.

An Analyst Warned Officials Were Steering Around the Elections Topic

“One email among intelligence analysts admitted that they had ‘deliberately massaged’ the presidential daily briefing to withhold information regarding Chinese activities related to the election,” the president said.

The phrase is the analyst’s own, unprompted, in a work email — not a characterization applied after the fact, and quoted accurately in the address. Whatever the full bureaucratic context, career intelligence officials describing their own editorial choices in exactly those terms, in writing, during the period the speech addresses, is now part of the public record.

Real Fraud, Confirmed by FBI’s Own Files MICHIGAN

“Some canvassers admitted to FBI agents that they signed voter registration forms and other people’s names, submitted fraudulent registration for people who did not exist, and received gift cards tied to their number of applications that they produced,” the president said. “In other words, it was pay, play, and cheat.”

The Michigan document set includes FBI witness statements describing exactly that conduct — canvassers who signed voter registration forms in other people’s names and submitted applications for people who did not exist — described directly in agents’ own case files, not characterized secondhand. A spreadsheet in the release tracks scores of flagged fraudulent applications. Whatever the ultimate prosecutorial outcome, the underlying conduct the FBI documented in Michigan was real fraud, on the record, from the government’s own investigators.

Real Non-Citizens, Confirmed on the Rolls 278,000

“According to the DHS review, state voter rolls and public records, they identified approximately two hundred seventy eight thousand non-citizens who are registered to vote in federal elections,” the president said, adding that “since Democrat states refused to share their voter files, the real number is actually much higher than that.”

A DHS summary in the fourth document set confirms that in a review of public voter files from just four states, more than 250,000 non-citizens were found registered to vote — consistent with the president’s figure and, as he said, described by DHS itself as a floor rather than a ceiling, given that many states have not made their full voter files available for review. Separately, DHS’s own verification system has already confirmed 28,000 non-citizens and 400,000 deceased registrants on state rolls where it’s been allowed to operate. Both numbers describe the same underlying problem at different stages of detection, and neither is zero.

The Case for the SAVE America Act

Taken together, the released documents describe a foreign adversary with extensive access to American voter data and a documented interest in the president’s defeat, election infrastructure that the government’s own cybersecurity agency says can be breached by “moderately skilled adversaries,” internal government communications describing deliberate steps to keep election-related findings out of formal briefings, confirmed instances of registration fraud, and confirmed non-citizens on active voter rolls. “Every American deserves to know that when they cast their vote, that vote will be counted accurately,” the president said, calling for a system “where cheating and interference are not just difficult, but virtually impossible.” The White House’s argument — that this combination justifies photo ID, proof of citizenship, and tighter mail-in ballot rules — rests on documented, now-public findings, not assertion alone.

Not every document in the release resolves as cleanly as the speech’s framing suggested, and Riptide will continue reading through the full set, including several files that didn’t scan cleanly and are still being reviewed. But the throughline the president drew Thursday night — foreign interest, real vulnerability, real fraud, real non-citizen registration — is backed by the government’s own paper trail, released in full for anyone willing to read it.

Trump got the toughness right. He got the strike order right. He killed the supreme leader, decapitated the chain of command, and watched the IRGC keep fighting anyway. That’s the problem nobody’s historical analogy prepared him for.

There is a version of the Trump-Iran story the administration wants to tell, and it is not wrong as far as it goes. Where Jimmy Carter kept vigil in the Rose Garden for 444 days while Tehran held 52 Americans hostage, Trump struck. Where Ronald Reagan scared the mullahs into releasing those hostages through credibility alone, Trump actually dropped bombs on nuclear sites, killed the supreme leader, and shattered the command structure that has governed Iran since the revolution. The “12-Day War” framing was deliberate: decisive, bounded, victorious. Reagan-adjacent, but with receipts.

The problem is that Iran is still there. The ceasefire is crumbling. U.S. Navy destroyers are transiting the Strait of Hormuz under fire. And the entity on the other side of the negotiating table — if it can be called that — is not a government in any recognizable sense. It is something considerably stranger and more dangerous: a decapitated revolutionary state running on institutional muscle memory, with no one clearly in charge and no one clearly empowered to say yes.

The Ghost in the Machine

Every historical analogy for this situation — Carter, Reagan, even the Nixon-era détente framework — assumes a counterpart. An adversary with a face, an address, a chain of command, and a rational interest in self-preservation that can be leveraged. Iran no longer has that in any clean sense. What it has is the IRGC.

Ali Khamenei was killed on the first day of Operation Epic Fury, February 28. His son Mojtaba was elevated to supreme leader by the Assembly of Experts — under heavy IRGC pressure, according to multiple intelligence assessments — but sustained serious injuries in the same strike. He has not been seen in public since. Iran issues written statements in his name. Israel has said it may target him next. An Iranian official told the Telegraph: “No one knows anything about Mojtaba, whether he is alive or dead or how badly injured. We are all just told that he’s injured. He has no control over the war because he is not here. The majority of commanders — or more correctly, all commanders — have no news about him.”

You cannot negotiate a surrender with a military council that didn’t start this war to win it — they started it to survive it.

Real power, according to assessments from the Institute for the Study of War, U.S. intelligence, and Israeli security officials, now flows through IRGC Commander Brig. Gen. Ahmad Vahidi and a hardline coalition operating through the Supreme National Security Council. Parliament Speaker Ghalibaf — whom Trump singled out as Washington’s interlocutor midway through the war — and Foreign Minister Araghchi cannot make decisions without IRGC approval. When Araghchi announced on April 17 that the Strait of Hormuz would reopen to commercial shipping, the IRGC effectively reversed the announcement within days by declaring the Strait closed again. The Foreign Minister negotiates. The IRGC decides. Sometimes in the opposite direction.

This is not a rift. It is the system functioning as designed — just without the civilian veneer that previously obscured it. As one analyst put it, Iran is “operating less as a hierarchy organized around a single dominant figure and more as a hardline coalition trying to manage war, diplomacy, and internal competition simultaneously.” The IRGC has always been the spine. Now it is also the face.

Why This Breaks Every Historical Playbook

Carter’s failure was the failure of misreading the adversary — he treated Khomeini’s revolutionary government like a state actor with recoverable interests. Reagan’s success was partly the benefit of having a coherent counterpart: an Iran that, however hostile, had a supreme leader who could make decisions and be held accountable for them. Khomeini was unreasonable but legible. You knew who held the levers.

Even Iran-Contra — Reagan’s great covert embarrassment — required a structured Iranian counterpart capable of receiving weapons, processing payments, and delivering results. The mullahs of the 1980s were ideologically committed to America’s destruction and practically capable of cutting deals. That combination, as perverse as it was, enabled negotiation.

What Trump is dealing with now has no clean historical precedent. The IRGC was deliberately structured to be decentralized — former security chief Ali Larijani reorganized it into autonomous regional commands empowered to act without central authorization. That’s why it kept fighting through decapitation strikes, kept blocking the Strait, kept testing ceasefire boundaries, and kept doing all of this while Iranian diplomats were simultaneously in Islamabad telling Pakistani mediators a deal was imminent. The diplomats may even be sincere. They just don’t control the outcome.

“Even if you remove the ayatollah, his successors are all hardliners too,” one U.S. intelligence source told CNN, describing an assessment that predicted exactly this: an Iranian government increasingly controlled by the IRGC regardless of who nominally holds the title of supreme leader. The warning was apparently accurate. It is less clear that it was acted on.

The Negotiating Table Problem Compounds

Against this backdrop, the structural mismatch on the American side becomes more consequential, not less. The U.S. negotiating team is led by Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner — both talented transactional dealmakers, neither carrying institutional expertise in Iranian revolutionary politics, nuclear architecture, or the internal IRGC power dynamics that will determine whether any agreement is actually enforceable. Iran’s team features career diplomats and scientists who have spent decades in exactly this environment.

The asymmetry signals to the IRGC — which is the audience that actually matters — that the American side needs a headline more than it needs a verifiable, durable framework. Real estate negotiations close when both sides want to close. Nuclear and military agreements with a revolutionary armed force that has just demonstrated it can survive a decapitation campaign require something different: granular understanding of which commitments the IRGC command structure will actually honor, which enforcement mechanisms they cannot easily circumvent, and what leverage survives the signing ceremony. Those are not deal-closing skills. They are architecture skills.

The Domestic Pressure Valve Tehran Reads

There is a temptation to dismiss the left’s sustained domestic opposition as noise — congressional Democrats calling the strikes illegal, War Powers debates in the Senate, credibility contested in real time. On the merits of whether confronting Iran’s nuclear program was necessary, the historical record is not kind to the accommodation caucus. Every period of American restraint — Biden, Obama’s JCPOA years, Bush’s non-engagement — ended with Iran’s program further advanced and American leverage further degraded. Trump’s instinct that this required different action was correct.

But the IRGC reads American political coverage the way a seasoned litigator reads deposition transcripts — looking for inconsistency, for signs of a deadline, for evidence that the other side needs to settle. A president under sustained domestic siege is a president whose political clock is ticking. The IRGC does not have an election cycle. It does not have a midterm. It has survived sanctions, strikes, and a supreme leader’s assassination and is still making military decisions in the Strait of Hormuz. The domestic opposition doesn’t create Iranian leverage, but it amplifies it — and the IRGC knows how to read a calendar.

Iran only has to survive to win. Trump has to achieve defined, verifiable outcomes on a political timetable the IRGC does not share and cannot be forced to respect.

The Verdict History Is Still Writing

Trump is not Carter. That verdict is in. He acted where Carter would not, and Reagan did not need to. Iran’s military infrastructure is degraded, the original supreme leader is dead, and the proxy network is under sustained pressure. Those are real, documented achievements that will outlast the current administration’s media cycle regardless of how the left frames them.

Whether the endgame resembles Reagan’s durable leverage or something messier depends on a question none of the historical analogies quite answer: how do you negotiate a verifiable agreement with an entity that has no single decision-maker, whose nominal leadership may be dead or incapacitated, whose military command is structurally designed to act autonomously, and whose institutional interest is in surviving indefinitely rather than resolving anything?

Carter had a hostage crisis with 52 faces and a 444-day clock. Reagan had a coherent adversary he could credibly threaten. Trump has a decentralized revolutionary military force operating through a ghost government, probing ceasefire boundaries with Iranian naval assets while diplomats in Islamabad say a deal is inches away.

The IRGC has been preparing for exactly this scenario since the 1980s. The question is whether anyone in Washington has been.

When President Trump declared a national emergency over Cuba on January 29, 2026, the executive order ran through a list of adversaries the Havana regime had invited onto the island: Russia, China, Iran, Hamas, Hezbollah. Most headlines that day focused on the sanctions. Few stopped to examine what the framing itself implied — that in the administration’s view, Cuba was not simply an isolated rogue state enduring its worst economic crisis in sixty years. It was infrastructure.

Three weeks later, U.S. and Israeli forces launched Operation Epic Fury. The war with Iran began.

The two events were not coincidental in their timing, and they are not unrelated in their logic. Understanding why requires looking at what Cuba actually represents in the current strategic environment — not as a Cold War artifact, but as an active intelligence platform 90 miles from Florida, running simultaneous collection operations for multiple U.S. adversaries, during a war involving one of them.

The Island That Never Stopped Listening

The Soviet signals intelligence complex at Lourdes, outside Havana, was shuttered in 2001. At its peak, it had housed an estimated 1,500 operatives and supplied the USSR with 75 percent of its military intelligence on the United States. When the Russians left, the Cuban intelligence services and the physical infrastructure largely stayed behind.

What filled the void, according to open-source analysis by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, was China.

CSIS identified four active signals intelligence facilities across Cuba: three clustered around Havana — Bejucal, El Wajay, and Calabazar — and a fourth, previously unreported site under construction since 2021 near Santiago de Cuba, just east of a neighborhood called El Salao. The El Salao site is two miles from a Chinese-financed port expansion project and, notably, just 40 miles from the U.S. Naval Station at Guantanamo Bay.

The Bejucal facility, which gained notoriety during the Cuban Missile Crisis for housing Soviet nuclear warheads, appears to have been significantly upgraded. Satellite imagery reviewed by CSIS shows antennas being repositioned — active collection — and new construction consistent with a large circular disposed antenna array, the same configuration the Soviets operated at nearly the same spot decades ago. These arrays are built for one purpose: determining the origin and direction of high-frequency signals across enormous distances.

“These sites are optimized not for espionage theater but for passive collection: satellite communications, tactical data links, airborne and maritime command-and-control traffic and timing patterns that reveal far more than content alone ever could,” said L.J. Eads, a former Air Force space network warfare and SIGINT analyst, in congressional testimony cited by the Washington Times in January. Eads made a pointed observation about what the Chinese collection posture in Cuba likely captured in real time during the January U.S. special operations raid on Venezuela that killed Cuban Black Wasp officers and captured Nicolas Maduro: “Beijing had a front-row seat to observe the way the U.S.” conducts joint operations — how it integrates communications, airborne assets, maritime elements, and cyber coordination across coalition partners simultaneously.

That was Venezuela. The Iran conflict is an order of magnitude larger.

What Iran Has to Do With It

Iran and Cuba are not natural allies in the conventional sense. They share no border, no language, no religion, and no significant trade history. What they share is structural: both are under severe U.S. economic pressure, both are formally aligned against American influence as an organizing principle of their foreign policy, and both have found in each other a useful node in a broader network of adversarial states.

In January 2026, Iran’s foreign minister, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, and Cuba’s foreign minister, Bruno Rodríguez, held a phone call to discuss, in diplomatic language, “existing capacities for expanding relations” and “strengthening coordination within international organizations.” Iran condemned what it called U.S. military aggression against Venezuela. Cuba, per its standard posture, condemned alongside.

The relationship has deeper institutional roots. In May 2025, Tehran and Havana signed strategic agreements specifically providing for the use of Cuban naval infrastructure to serve South American partners — with Venezuela named explicitly as an emphasis. Cuba signed a separate contract with the Iranian company Wagon Pars for railroad components. In February 2025, the two countries held their 19th Commission on Iran-Cuba Economic Cooperation in Havana. Iran has maintained annual credit lines to Cuba in the range of $200 million to $500 million over the past decade.

The 2026 Annual Threat Assessment, released by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard in March, named Iran alongside China and Russia as nations “seeking to sustain economic, political and military engagement with Latin America,” with Russia specifically flagged as wanting to “expand its current security and diplomatic ties with Cuba.” Iran’s missile production facilities had by that point been heavily struck by Operation Epic Fury, and the assessment noted that determining the full impact on Iran’s long-range missile capability — including technology that could be adapted toward an ICBM before 2035 — was still ongoing.

That assessment was written while the United States was actively at war with Iran. The SIGINT infrastructure in Cuba was active during the same period. The question of whether Iranian-linked actors have access to any portion of what Cuba’s intelligence apparatus collects — or whether Iran benefits from what China and Russia collect there — is not a question that has been answered publicly.

It is, however, a question that the new National Defense Authorization Act explicitly required someone to answer. The NDAA mandated a report from the Secretary of Defense and the Director of National Intelligence on Chinese and Russian intelligence capabilities in Cuba, including an assessment of counterintelligence risks and Pentagon resources available to counter them. The report was due by June 2026.

As of this writing, it has not been released.

The Architecture of Access

Cuba’s value as an intelligence platform is not primarily about what Cuba itself collects. It’s about geography and access — and about what it enables others to do.

The southeastern seaboard of the United States is one of the most intelligence-rich strips of territory on earth. MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, home to U.S. Central Command and U.S. Special Operations Command. Kennedy Space Center. Eglin Air Force Base. The naval installations at Pensacola, Mayport, and Kings Bay. Patrick Space Force Base. The satellite ground stations and defense testing ranges spread across Florida and the Gulf Coast. From a facility at Bejucal or El Salao, a properly configured antenna array can observe communications traffic, radar signatures, tactical data links, and timing patterns across a vast swath of this infrastructure — not necessarily the content, but the patterns, which can be equally revealing.

“Cuba’s proximity to the southern United States and the Caribbean makes it a prime location for collecting signals intelligence on the region,” CSIS noted in its analysis. “For Beijing, having access to SIGINT capabilities in Cuba would open a significant intelligence window inaccessible from within Chinese territory.”

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been more direct. Speaking from the State Department, Rubio declared: “We will not allow any foreign military, intelligence, or security apparatus to operate with impunity just 90 miles off the U.S. coast. This will not happen under Donald Trump’s presidency.” He characterized Cuba as having “invited U.S. adversaries to operate within Cuban territory against our national interests, with complete impunity.”

The word “adversaries” in that sentence is doing significant work. The White House’s January executive order listed Iran by name alongside Russia and China. During the current conflict, Iran has demonstrated — through Chinese-enabled targeting networks and electronic warfare support — an increasingly sophisticated ability to integrate outside intelligence into its own operations. The Small Wars Journal, analyzing Chinese-Iranian intelligence cooperation during Epic Fury, noted that Iranian forces were using telecommunications networks and digital infrastructure to relay targeting information in real time, with Chinese technical expertise potentially enhancing their ability to resist GPS jamming and disrupt enemy radar systems.

None of that originated in Cuba. But Cuba sits inside the collection perimeter for the command-and-control infrastructure that is running the war.

The Pentagon’s Two-Front Problem

For U.S. military planners, the Cuban SIGINT question during an active Iran conflict creates a specific and uncomfortable problem: it is not possible to fully compartmentalize Caribbean collection from Middle Eastern operations.

U.S. Central Command, headquartered at MacDill, is running Operation Epic Fury and the Hormuz blockade. The communications traffic, satellite uplinks, command-and-control protocols, and operational patterns flowing through that headquarters don’t disappear because a conflict is occurring on the other side of the world. They become more intense, more frequent, and more revealing — the kind of traffic that a passive collection facility near Havana is designed to absorb.

This is not a hypothetical. When the U.S. conducted Operation Absolute Resolve in January — the Delta Force raid that captured Maduro in Caracas — the after-action intelligence assessment, as reported by the Washington Times, indicated that Chinese SIGINT assets in Cuba had almost certainly observed U.S. joint warfare signatures in real time. What that collection looked like during a months-long conflict is a different question in scale if not in kind.

Former Air Force SIGINT analyst Eads put it plainly: modern warfare is “driven by weapons powered by networks, data links, command processes and communication protocols.” Passive collection of those signals, over time, builds a picture of how American forces fight — not just in Venezuela, but everywhere.

The Pentagon drafting military contingency plans for Cuba, as reported by multiple outlets including Zeteo and USA Today in April, may be driven by factors beyond economic coercion of the Díaz-Canel government. Planners who understand what’s happening at Bejucal and El Salao have reason to think about those facilities in terms that go beyond embarrassment to active operational risk — particularly while CENTCOM is running a live war.

The Congressional Gap

There is a significant oversight gap here, and it has not been filled.

The NDAA-mandated Pentagon report on Chinese and Russian SIGINT capabilities in Cuba has not been released publicly. The report was specifically required to include an assessment of “counterintelligence risks” and Pentagon “capabilities and resources” to counter the electronic surveillance. Congress required it because, by January 2026, enough had accumulated in the classified and open-source record that lawmakers felt the executive branch needed to formally account for what it knew and what it was doing about it.

Iran’s relationship with the Cuban intelligence infrastructure is a separate question that the mandated report may or may not address — the legislative language specified China and Russia. Given that the White House’s own executive order named Iran as a party to Cuba’s adversarial alignment, the absence of Iran from the NDAA’s reporting requirement is notable. Whether that reflects a deliberate scoping decision or an oversight in the drafting is unclear.

Senator Tim Kaine, one of the few members of Congress to publicly challenge the legal basis of potential Cuba military action, has framed the oil blockade itself as potentially constituting an act of war under international law — arguing that the administration is conducting what amounts to armed coercion without congressional authorization. The Senate voted in April to reject a Democratic amendment that would have required a congressional vote before military action against Cuba could be taken.

That vote resolved the near-term political question. It did not resolve the underlying strategic one.

What Comes After Iran

Trump has said, in language that was not subtle, that the United States will “immediately take control of Cuba” following the conclusion of the Iran conflict. The USS Abraham Lincoln — currently leading operations in the Hormuz theater — was specifically named as the carrier he would position off the Cuban coast.

Whether that represents a genuine operational plan or a negotiating posture directed at Havana is a matter of ongoing debate among analysts. What is not in debate is that the administration has escalated its Cuba policy in direct parallel with the Iran conflict: the January executive order, the oil blockade, the sanctions targeting Cuban regime officials and their families, the Pentagon planning directive leaked in April. The trajectory is not ambiguous.

For those watching from a national security perspective, the Cuba question was never simply about regime change or the emigration crisis or even the narcotics flows that the Justice Department has used to justify federal charges against Cuban officials. It is also, and perhaps primarily, about infrastructure — about who is listening, and what they hear.

The Soviets figured this out sixty years ago. They built Lourdes. They staffed it with 1,500 people. They collected 75 percent of their American military intelligence from a facility 90 miles from Florida.

China apparently figured it out, too. Russia never stopped. And Iran, which signed agreements with Cuba for naval infrastructure access in 2025, which received credit lines through Havana for decades, and which the White House’s own emergency declaration cited by name as a beneficiary of Cuba’s adversarial alignment — Iran was watching Operation Epic Fury from a country that, in terms of signals intelligence geography, has a better view of CENTCOM headquarters than most of America does.

The mandated Pentagon report is due in June. The Iran conflict is ongoing. Cuba is 90 miles away.

These facts are not unrelated.

Nobody who attended the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night expected to spend the rest of the evening lying on a ballroom floor.

Just minutes into the program, attendees heard muffled popping noises and watched as President Trump, the first lady, and top officials were rushed away from the head table. The suspect — later identified as Cole Allen — had a shotgun, a handgun, and knives, and ran past security barricades before a Secret Service agent, protected by a bullet-resistant vest, was shot and is now recovering.

White House Correspondents’ Association President Weijia Jiang initially announced the program would continue, and Trump signaled on social media that he wanted the dinner to go on. Only later, on the advice of law enforcement, did Trump say he wanted it postponed — and Jiang confirmed it would be.

Now the WHCA has a window — probably 30 days, if Trump gets his do-over — to figure out something that should have been figured out years ago: where, exactly, do you host this thing?

The Hilton Was Always the Wrong Venue for This Moment

The Washington Hilton has hosted the Correspondents’ Dinner for decades. It has also, as Sen. John Fetterman pointed out bluntly on social media after Saturday’s incident, never been designed for what the dinner has become. Fetterman said the venue “wasn’t built to accommodate an event with the line of succession for the U.S. government.”

He’s right, and it shouldn’t have taken a near-assassination to say so out loud.

A crowd of 2,600 attended Saturday night’s event. The room packs attendees at round tables whose chairs are back-to-back, with tight space to move around. It was designed for prestige, not security. And in 2026, with two prior assassination attempts against the sitting president already on the books, prestige doesn’t cover the tab when something goes wrong.

Some attendees, after the fact, flagged the apparently lax security at the dinner. Kari Lake, attending as a senior adviser for the U.S. Agency for Global Media, said she couldn’t believe “how lax the security was,” describing how nobody asked to visibly inspect her ticket or asked her to do anything beyond the standard screening.

That’s not a venue problem. That’s an event-management failure compounded by a venue problem.

So Where Does It Go?

If you have 30 days to replan this dinner with the President of the United States still in the room, you are not optimizing for elegance, tradition, or symbolism. You are optimizing for three things: security, practicality, and the ability to actually execute a 2,600-person formal event with the full presidential protection apparatus in roughly four weeks. DAR Constitution Hall: The Prestige Trap

On paper, Constitution Hall is Washington’s largest concert hall, with a seating capacity of 3,702, and hosts gala dinners, award ceremonies, television productions, and corporate events. It sits at 1776 D Street NW, near the White House, and every U.S. president since Calvin Coolidge has attended at least one event there. The lineage is impeccable.

The problems are structural. Constitution Hall seats 3,702 in a concert configuration — before you lose capacity reconfiguring for round banquet tables, proper spacing, press risers, a head table with sightlines, and security staging areas. The math gets tight fast. The building was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1985, which introduces real constraints on what temporary security infrastructure can be installed, how quickly, and whether the building owner — the Daughters of the American Revolution, a private organization — can or will move at Secret Service speed.

The surrounding streets near the Ellipse are manageable perimeter-wise, but the footprint is tight, parking is limited to street meters and a nearby garage, and the venue has no dedicated loading infrastructure for the kind of production operation the dinner requires. In a 30-day window, the logistics friction alone could sink it. Constitution Hall is a great venue for a lot of Washington events. It is not built for this one.

The Anthem: Right Building, Wrong Address

The Anthem is the most technically capable music venue on this list, and the geography disqualifies it before the security team finishes the site survey.

The 57,000-square-foot waterfront venue has a movable stage and backdrop that allows capacity to vary from 2,500 to 6,000 people, which would actually let the WHCA right-size the room. Through the use of loose seating, stage extensions, and the optional third level, the capacity can be adjusted while always feeling full and lively — a legitimate advantage over a static hotel ballroom. The production infrastructure is modern and purpose-built.

But The Anthem is part of The Wharf, a comprehensive redevelopment of the Southwest Waterfront area, and that’s the fatal problem. It sits embedded in a mixed-use commercial development with restaurants, hotels, condominiums, water taxi stops, and open pedestrian access from multiple directions, including the Potomac River itself. Establishing a secure perimeter around The Anthem means locking down an entire working waterfront district — every access point, every business entrance, the water side, the marina. That’s not a 30-day security standup. That’s a months-long planning operation. The Secret Service would take one look at the site diagram and move on.

The Anthem works for concerts. It doesn’t work when the threat includes approaching from the water.

Capital One Arena: Under Construction, Literally

Capital One Arena gets floated as an option because it’s large, iconic, and sits in the heart of downtown D.C. atop a Metro station with one of the most accessible footprints in the city. At full configuration, the arena holds over 20,000 people, and its existing security infrastructure — strict no-bag policies, mandatory searches, and controlled entry procedures — already operates closer to a protective security standard than most venues in the District.

There’s one problem: it’s in the middle of an $800 million renovation with active exterior construction underway right now.

As of early 2026, crews are working to remove the outside shell of the building and replace it, with temporary shifts in entrances and exits, including shutting down the sidewalk on F Street on event nights. Major exterior construction phases are continuing through 2026 and 2027, with a new main entrance not expected to open until fall 2026. The Secret Service cannot establish a clean, stable perimeter around a building whose exterior is actively being dismantled. Scaffolding, construction equipment, temporary entry points, and contractor access are security liabilities that no advance team is going to sign off on in a 30-day window with a live threat assessment on the table.

Capital One Arena would be a serious option in 2028. It is not an option right now.

The Gaylord National: The Practical Choice Nobody Wants to Make

The Gaylord National in National Harbor, Maryland, addresses nearly every security concern on the list. It’s a self-contained resort campus with controlled ingress, a massive ballroom capable of handling the dinner’s full guest list, natural separation from the open-street environment that complicates D.C. venues, and an established track record hosting high-profile events. The perimeter is straightforward — water on one side, controlled access roads on the others. Secret Service has worked this site before.

The case against it: it’s in Maryland. And while perception matters less here than security and practicality, this particular perception problem is substantive — hosting the Correspondents’ Dinner outside the District means the WHCA, the press corps, and the event itself visibly retreated across the Potomac after an assassination attempt. That’s not just optics. It changes what the rescheduled dinner means, and not in the WHCA’s favor. Trump doesn’t want a retreat. The press corps doesn’t want a retreat. The Gaylord is the safe fallback if the Convention Center falls through, not the first call.

Walter E. Washington Convention Center: The Only Venue That Checks Every Box

Strip away all other considerations and work from first principles: what does the Secret Service actually need to protect the President at a 2,600-person event in 30 days?

A self-contained, purpose-built facility on a controllable urban footprint. Multiple layered entry points that can be staged as security perimeters. Separation capacity between the press pool, administration officials, VIP guests, and support staff. Infrastructure that can handle magnetometers, screening lanes, K-9 units, and command posts without improvisation. Production capability for broadcast. Proximity to the White House without being embedded in a complex like The Wharf.

The Convention Center checks every one of those boxes — and it has done it before at the highest level. The Secret Service has transformed the center into a highly fortified environment for presidential events, with architecture specifically designed to facilitate the rapid screening of tens of thousands of guests through extensive rows of magnetometers. Six of the 10 official balls of the 2009 Presidential Inauguration took place there, and it was the principal site of the 2010 Nuclear Security Summit hosted by President Obama. Its event history runs from international policy conferences to black-tie fundraisers and presidential inaugural balls.

The facility covers over 700,000 square feet of exhibition space with 77 meeting rooms, and can handle conventions of up to 42,000 people. The WHCA isn’t trying to fill the whole building — it’s trying to fill a fraction of it, which means it can design an event footprint around security requirements rather than trying to retrofit security around an existing floor plan. That is a fundamental advantage that none of the other venues on this list can offer.

The Convention Center is owned and operated by Events DC, the city’s convention arm — a public entity, not a private organization with its own institutional identity and priorities. That means the WHCA isn’t negotiating with a hotel chain’s corporate security team or a concert promoter’s event staff. It’s coordinating with a public venue that has a long track record of working directly with federal security agencies on exactly this category of event. In a 30-day window, that relationship matters more than any architectural feature.

The Convention Center is not the most interesting venue on this list. The Anthem is more interesting. Constitution Hall has more history. Capital One Arena has more infrastructure under normal circumstances. None of that matters when you have four weeks, a live threat, and a president who wants to finish the dinner.

A Question Worth Taking Seriously: What About a White House Ballroom?

Trump, posting Sunday morning, argued the shooting was “exactly the reason” a new ballroom should be built on White House grounds, and that the incident “would never have happened” if the construction currently underway were complete. The Justice Department cited the shooting the same day in pushing to have a preservation lawsuit against the White House ballroom project dropped, calling the Washington Hilton “demonstrably unsafe” for events with the president.

That concern isn’t baseless. But it’s also worth being honest about what the actual objection is, because “the White House grounds are too secure” is not a serious argument.

Reporters with hard passes are already on White House grounds constantly — in the briefing room, in the stakeout positions, in the hallways, trying to get answers from people who often don’t want to give them. The idea that a Correspondents’ Dinner held on those same grounds would somehow compromise the press corps’ independence requires assuming a level of symbolic fragility that the actual day-to-day relationship between the press and the White House doesn’t reflect.

The security case for a purpose-built White House ballroom is, frankly, strong. Saturday’s attack happened because a president attending an event off White House grounds was exposed to a threat that a permanent White House security infrastructure is specifically designed to prevent. A ballroom on the most secure 18 acres in America, with a permanent protective apparatus that doesn’t need to be stood up in 30 days, would address the core failure of Saturday night more directly than any off-site venue swap.

The legitimate question for the WHCA isn’t whether a White House ballroom is too secure — it’s whether the organization retains operational control of its own event. That’s a negotiation about terms, not a categorical objection to the venue. The dinner’s editorial and organizational independence doesn’t live in a building. It lives in who runs the program, sets the guest list, chooses the entertainment, and controls the podium. Those are questions the WHCA should ask before signing any venue agreement — including this one.

For the rescheduled dinner, none of this matters: the ballroom doesn’t exist yet, so it’s not on the table in a 30-day window. But as a longer-term question about where this event belongs, it deserves a more honest answer than the one the press corps has been giving.

He was tackled to the ground before reaching the ballroom. A law enforcement officer was injured — protected by his vest. No one was killed.

Before he entered the lobby, before leaving his hotel room, Allen had sent a message to his family. The White House confirmed he “clearly stated” his intent to target Trump administration officials. The DOJ announced Sunday that preliminary findings indicate the President himself was the intended target. His writings included this passage: “I am no longer willing to permit a pedophile, rapist, and traitor to coat my hands with his crimes.”

Read that sentence carefully. Every word of it was manufactured for him. Not by fringe accounts. Not by anonymous message boards. By sitting United States senators, House members, cable news anchors, and the billion-dollar nonprofit infrastructure that feeds them their language and collects their donations.

Cole Allen did not write that sentence. He assembled it. And the people who handed him the pieces will face no consequences whatsoever.

This is the story of how that works, who profits from it, and why they will never stop on their own.

The Business Model

Political divisiveness in America is not a cultural failure. It is a revenue stream.

The formula is not complicated: fear and outrage generate clicks, donations, and votes. Unity generates none of those things. A political opponent who is wrong is not useful. A political opponent who is a traitor, a fascist, a rapist, a threat to democracy, a king — that is a political opponent who can be harvested. Indefinitely. Across every platform. In every fundraising cycle.

The machine that manufactures that dehumanization is not operating in the shadows. It is operating in the United States Senate, in the House of Representatives, in the offices of nationally funded nonprofit organizations, in the green rooms of cable news networks, and through a dark money infrastructure that has turned the systematic destruction of political norms into one of the most profitable enterprises in American history.

What happened at the Washington Hilton on Saturday night was not a surprise. It was output. It was the predictable, documented, financially incentivized result of a system that has been running at full capacity for years — and that accelerated dramatically after Donald Trump returned to office in January 2025.

Fear and outrage generate clicks, donations, and votes. Unity generates none of those things.

The Elected Officials Who Turned Up the Heat

Let’s be direct about something that most political commentary refuses to say plainly: the members of Congress who have spent the past year calling the sitting President of the United States a traitor, a fascist, a rapist, a felon, and a king bear direct moral responsibility for the environment that sent Cole Allen to Washington with a shotgun.

This is not a rhetorical point. It is a causal argument.

Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland has built his entire national brand on a single premise: that the Republican Party, its leadership, and its voters represent an existential, constitutional, democratic catastrophe. Every floor speech, every cable hit, every fundraising email that follows a particularly inflammatory statement is a financial transaction. Raskin does not de-escalate because de-escalation does not pay. The apocalyptic framing — democracy on the brink, fascism at the door, the republic burning — is not Raskin’s genuine assessment of every news cycle. It is his product. He manufactures it, packages it, and sells it to donors who need to believe they are fighting for civilization itself.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer stood on the steps of the Supreme Court in 2020 and told a crowd that Justices Gorsuch and Kavanaugh had “released the whirlwind” and would “pay the price.” In 2024, and in response to legal actions taken against New York Attorney General Letitia James, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer stated on a broadcast that people “should be forcefully rising up against” the government’s actions, calling the situation a “hallmark of tyrannical, autocratic dictatorship societies.” He was never fined. He was not censured. He raised money off it.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has characterized Republican governance in terms specifically designed to signal to his base that normal democratic opposition is insufficient — that what is happening to the country is not a policy disagreement but an occupation. Jeffries promised “maximum warfare, everywhere, all the time” regarding the upcoming 2026 midterm elections. That framing is deliberate. It is tested in focus groups and optimized for donation conversion. Every dollar raised on that framing is a dollar that requires the framing to remain at maximum intensity.

Sen. Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, Rep. Ro Khanna — the list of elected officials whose financial survival depends on keeping their base at a sustained pitch of existential terror is long and bipartisan in the sense that it exists across different levels of government. But it is not symmetric. Van Hollen has frequently used the term “lawless” to describe the administration. The current wave of political violence — the Kirk assassination, the Correspondents’ Dinner attack, the repeated attempts on Trump — flows overwhelmingly in one direction. And the rhetoric that produced it flows overwhelmingly from one side of the aisle.

Cole Allen wrote that he could no longer permit a “traitor” and “rapist” to coat his hands with crimes. He used those specific words because those specific words have been used — in prepared statements, in Senate floor speeches, in fundraising emails, in cable news chyrons — hundreds of thousands of times by people with press credentials and security details.

They said it. He believed it. He acted on it.

No Kings: The $294 Million Uprising That Wasn’t Grassroots

On June 14, 2025 — the same day Vance Boelter assassinated Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband in their Brooklyn Park home — millions of Americans took to the streets in the first “No Kings” protest, organized primarily by Indivisible and a coalition of progressive organizations.

The media described it as a spontaneous civic uprising. The largest single-day protest in American history. The people rising up.

Researchers at the Government Accountability Institute identified $294,487,641 in grants flowing from six major donor networks to more than 100 official No Kings partner organizations. Indivisible, the lead organizer, received a $3 million grant from Open Society Foundations — George Soros’s charitable network. A nonprofit called Home of the Brave ran a separate $1 million advertising campaign in newspapers nationwide specifically to promote the marches. Fox News Digital traced participation from a network of socialist and communist organizations funded by Neville Roy Singham, an American tech tycoon and avowed communist living in China, whose network includes the People’s Forum, the Party for Socialism and Liberation, the ANSWER Coalition, and CodePink.

These are not grassroots organizations. They are professional political operations with radical leadership, foreign-linked funding, and a specific strategic objective: to frame the elected government of the United States as illegitimate and its supporters as enemies of democracy.

The protest network called Trump a king, a dictator, a fascist — not because that is an accurate characterization of a president operating within constitutional norms, but because that framing is worth $294 million to the people who deploy it. It is worth billions more in small-dollar donations, media subscriptions, and future organizing infrastructure.

When you tell millions of people that the government is run by a fascist king, and you say it loudly and repeatedly and with the institutional authority of U.S. senators standing at podiums, some percentage of those people will draw the logical conclusion that a fascist king should be stopped by any means necessary.

Cole Allen drew that conclusion. He traveled across the country to act on it.

The Violence Goes Both Ways — and That’s the Point

This is not an argument that political violence belongs exclusively to the left. It does not, and the record is clear.

A hit list found in Boelter’s abandoned vehicle contained approximately 70 names — Democratic lawmakers, abortion rights advocates, U.S. senators, and others. He is charged with two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder and has pleaded not guilty.

Boelter’s politics were not ambiguous. Friends described him as a devout evangelical who attended Trump rallies. He was driven by opposition to abortion and LGBTQ rights. His target list was ideological.

So was Cole Allen’s.

So was Tyler Robinson’s, the 22-year-old who shot Charlie Kirk in the neck at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025.

So were the two men who attempted to assassinate Donald Trump in 2024.

This is the central fact that both political parties, the national media, and the dark money machine are invested in obscuring: the political violence crisis in America is not a partisan problem. What the audit record does show: Maryland’s Office of Legislative Audits uncovered $3.42 billion in undocumented federal funds across eight state agencies. Forty-two state offices spent a combined $8.5 billion last year with minimal oversight. The State Highway Administration was flagged for $360 million in unauthorized expenses charged to federal projects. The Social Services Administration was found to have placed foster children in homes with convicted sex predators. The Department of Juvenile Services failed to perform criminal background checks on workers with vulnerable youth. Thirty-four percent of audit findings repeat in subsequent audits — a rate the Office of Legislative Audits says it has not seen since before 2010.

They were coordinated by Indivisible, funded through Open Society Foundations’ grant network, amplified by allied organizations with foreign-linked Soros-adjacent funding, and infiltrated — intentionally, by design — by socialist and communist organizations that explicitly described the protests as an opportunity to spread “revolutionary organizing.” These organizations described the United States government as fascist. They described the sitting president as a king and a dictator. They distributed that language to millions of participants who, in many cases, genuinely believed they were defending democracy.

The elected officials who spoke at these rallies — who lent the institutional authority of the United States Senate and House of Representatives to marches that were partly organized by groups calling for revolutionary action — did not accidentally raise the temperature. They chose to.

The No Kings movement — organized by Indivisible, amplified by Soros-network funding, and openly co-opted by revolutionary socialist organizations — held what its organizers claim were the largest single-day protests in American history. Elected Democrats spoke at those rallies. No one in leadership called for the language to be toned down. Toning down is not in the financial model.

Melissa Hortman is dead, shot in her home by a man with a target list. Charlie Kirk is dead, shot on a college campus by a man who had absorbed the SPLC’s designation. Cole Allen tried to kill the President of the United States at a press dinner, having assembled his grievance from years of professionally manufactured vocabulary.
